MFG DAY Puts Spotlight on Flourishing Career Path

October 5 Event Showcases Manufacturing Technology to Upstate Students

Greenville, SC – It may be the best career opportunity many young people have never considered: Manufacturing. It’s back and its nothing like it was decades ago. To get that message out, a coalition of manufacturing advocates created MFG Day. At hundreds of locations around the nation on October 5, manufacturing employers and educators will be sharing a very compelling story.

Case in point: It’s projected that nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs in the United States must be filled over the next decade, but only about 1.5 million people will possess the necessary skills to do the work. What remains is widely known among manufacturers as the “Skill Gap.”

What is not widely known is that these jobs even exist.  There’s an irony to all of this. While most people believe a strong manufacturing sector is vital to economic growth, they no longer consider it a viable career option. They are unaware that advanced automation and robotics have allowed America to regain its competitive foothold.

While an individual factory may no longer hire thousands of employees, the hundreds they do employ are highly-skilled professionals who work in mechanized, clean environments, integrating and maintaining robots and automated systems.

They earn a solid income. Average entry-level compensation for manufacturing engineers is nearly $60,000. For manufacturing workers overall in the United States, it’s more than $77,000 (Manufacturing Institute).

From 9:30 am to 1:30 pm on Wednesday, October 5, ECPI University’s Greenville campus  - located at 1001 Keys Drive – will  host employers and industry supporters who will welcome nearly 200  Upstate high school students for a full day of activities and education.  Attendees will have a chance to:

  • See game changing technology in action such as robotics, automation, replicators, 3-D printers, and more
  • View demos, displays, and manufacturing exhibits
  • Learn how to gain the skills required to work in the manufacturing field

“They’re going to be impressed,” says ECPI University Greenville Campus President Karen Burgess. “When people get a close look at modern manufacturing, they discover an environment that is ideal for this technically-oriented, computer-savvy generation. They find that manufacturing is no longer a dirty, back-breaking job. Today’s advanced manufacturing facilities are modern marvels, clean environments filled with skilled professionals operating all kinds of mechanical, electronic, and computer-based systems.”

MFG Day Employers and Participants:

  • BMW
  • PA Solutions
  • Michelin
  • KUKA Robotics
  • U.S. Army
  • JTekt
  • Greenville Water
  • Pierburg US
  • Imagine Upstate

Manufacturing Day is co-produced by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA), the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Manufacturing Institute (MI), the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST), and Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP).

PA Solutions Partnership Aims to Teach Upstate Workers How to Program/Troubleshoot Robots

Greenville, SC – ECPI University’s Greenville campus has formed a partnership with PA Solutions, aimed at helping people throughout the Upstate region acquire skills to work with robotic and automated manufacturing systems. Founded in 1986, PA Solutions is a leading independent supplier of automation solutions for the chemical and automotive markets, providing electrical, instrumentation and control engineering for the process industry.

In recent years, advanced automation and robotics are largely responsible for helping the region attract manufacturing operations. While production lines no longer require as many workers as they once did, the people who program, monitor, and maintain this equipment must possess a high-level skill set. However, finding enough of these qualified workers has been quite challenging.

Through ECPI University’s new partnership with PA Solutions, the company has acquired a new KUKA industrial robot for the University’s use on and off campus. A pioneer in robotics and automation technology, KUKA robots are among the worlds’ most widely used. PA Solutions employees will serve as adjunct professors, not only working with ECPI University students, but also in the community at large.

“We envision taking this equipment to area high schools and training students who may want to pursue a manufacturing career right after graduation,” says ECPI University Greenville Campus President Karen Burgess. “Many of our local manufacturers – including BMW – use KUKA robotics. Upon completion of their training, students can be prepared to become fully certified on this equipment and eligible to compete for some very desirable jobs.”

For more information about this partnership please contact Campus President Karen Burgess at 864.288.2828 or [email protected]. Media inquiries can be directed to ECPI Director of Marketing at 757.490.9090 or [email protected]

Program Helps Students Find Careers to Best Match Skills and Interests

Since opening in September 2006, more than 1,000 externships have been completed at ECPI University's School of Culinary Arts, Culinary Institute of Virginia (CIV) in Norfolk. As an integral part of the school's curriculum, the externship program provides students with real-world, hands-on working experience in restaurants and other culinary businesses.

Unlike many culinary programs, CIV's externship program is based on a European apprenticeship model where a student would spend time in the work place while enrolled in classes at school. CIV students are also eligible to complete two externships, allowing them to explore different aspects of the food service industry, which contributes to their versatility as graduates.

Externship sites range from family-owned to corporate restaurants, university dining facilities, corporate food service, hospitality, catering companies, food media and other related businesses.

Rhys Lewis is Executive Chef at the Williamsburg Lodge, part of the Williamsburg Colonial Foundation. He has partnered with CIV for nearly five years and has had dozens of students do their externships at the lodge. Several just completed their programs.

"We rely on CIV to provide students with the right interests and talents to match our employment needs," Lewis says. "Some of our best hires were externs who are now on our staff. School personnel assess our priorities and requirements. We attend their job fairs and stay in contact with the career advisors. CIV is a great recruiting resource for us."
The school has four full time career advisors, each with experience in the food service industry. Career advisors work one-on-one with each student on job acquisition skills and identifying potential externship sites. Advisors regularly visit a broad range of employers to learn about their current and future business needs.
"By knowing our students and prospective employers, CIV career advisors take on the role of matchmakers," says, Andy Gladstein, Campus Provost at CIV. "Like the work of any matchmaker, a successful pairing of student and employer will lead to a long and happy relationship."
Despite the challenging economy, CIV estimates that over 90 percent of each graduating class accepted positions in the culinary field upon program completion. Of CIV's Class of 2011, 50% of students remained working at their externship site after program completion.
Josh Segal is currently doing an externship as a cook at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia.
"There's nothing better than actual industry experience to apply skills I've learned in class" says Segal, 25, a Newport News native. "I wanted to work in a large resort setting and the fit is just what I was looking for."
For more information about ECPI University's School of Culinary Arts, Culinary Institute of Virginia, visit the CIV website at www.chefva.com or contact Scott McCaskey at Goldman & Associates at [email protected] or 757-625-2518.
