Course Description: This course introduces students to principles, theories and concepts used for providing and directing holistic care of individuals with mental health alterations. Legal aspects in mental health nursing practice are discussed along with methods to minimize risks. Students practice the use of therapeutic communication to establish and maintain therapeutic relationships. Students also practice interdisciplinary team functions including health teaching and develop counseling skills. Learning opportunities are presented in the classroom, simulation, and in supervised clinical experiences.

Care of the well child and common disorders related to the care of sick children are also included. Students continue to build on previously acquired knowledge and skills. Various nutritional needs of these clients are addressed. In the clinical setting, students will use informatics to manage and communicate client data. Students will also begin to identify specific hazards that may impact patient care and communicate them to the RN, who is a member of the interdisciplinary team.
